nooosugar.nl is an internet shop where you can find unique handmade interior and fashion accessories which will give an original and personal accent to your interior or your wardrobe. Distinctive modern designs combined with decorative Moroccan handcraft.
How it all started
nooosugar.nl originated from enthousiastic teamwork between Susanne Houx and Anja Bas Backer, who both work as a stylist and editorial co-ordinator for various interior and lifestyle magazines in the Netherlands.
During a journey through Morocco, Susanne discovered beautiful hand-woven materials, traditional decorative handwork techniques, and brilliant colours, which inspired her to develop various products herself, all with a modern tint. Anja also became enthousiastic through Susanne´s stories and, realising the potentials, they decided to take up the challenge and work together to develop a collection which they could sell via the internet.
Handmade
The products that are sold on this site are all handmade, in small ateliers, by experienced craftsmen with traditional handcraft techniques. In the weaving mill the weavers use old wooden looms that have been handed down from generation to generation. For instance, every stitch on the leather poufs is sewn by hand. A co-operative of women knit the Lala Mika bags, the thread for which is made from plastic bags from the market.
Everything is handmade, which implies that there can be irregularities in texture etc., and every article is slightly different, but this only adds to the charm.
Unique products
The nooosugar.nl collection is a mixture of self-developed designs and existing products. The existing products have been carefully selected for their excellent quality, colour and handcraft. This guarantees the best of both worlds!
The nooosugar.nl products are a combination of modern design and traditional handcraft techniques, made in small quantities in close collaboration with local craftsmen. Every length of material that is woven has a different pattern of stripes, which makes it unique. These materials are made into cushions, for example, but with a maximum of four cushions in the same pattern.
The cow hides that are used to make the leather poufs are carefully selected for lasting quality, the modern decorations are applied with a traditional handcraft technique, and the off-cuts of the leather are used to make small accessories. The sturdy foam filling for the poufs has been developed in the Netherlands.
nooosugar.nl is not a wholesale business, the products are made on a small scale and sold only on this site. Many of the products are made in such small quantities that they often sell out very quickly, but similar products, new colours, and new designs are continuously being added to the collection.
